Volunteer: Meals on Wheels needs you! Deliver a hot meal and a smile.Remember not so long ago when everyone, except for essential workers, were stuck at home? What if that never ended for you. What if you were not able to get out of the home or to even cook your own meal? What if you had little to no family around and there you are unable to get out with others. You can make a difference in people's lives. You can take a couple of hours out of your day to make a world of difference to someone homebound. Countless times we hear from recipients how they would not have a meal if it was not for volunteers bringing a meal to their door. Sometimes, the visit is also a welfare check; making sure that person is okay. You may brighten a person's whole day just by chatting with them for a few minutes. Won't you take a couple of hours out of your day to make a lifetime of difference to someone in need? Areas of need in eight counties in Northeast TN: Washington, Sullivan, Carter, Unicoi, Greene, Johnson, Hawkins, and Hancock. We especially have needs for volunteers in Hampton, Church Hill, and Johnson City at this time. Other areas available as well. Volunteer: Reading Buddies NeededCommunity mentors play an important role in the success of the Reading Buddies program. Ideally, a volunteer is paired with a student while he or she is in kindergarten. It's particularly helpful when the Reading Buddy is able to continue with that student as he or she progresses through the first and second grades.
Our hope is that 90% of all students enter the third grade reading on grade level. You can help with this lofty goal by giving just 30 minutes a week of your time. No special skills are needed. You simply need to be prepared to have a positive interaction with a young child. Many volunteers enjoy it so much that they participate with more than one student per week. We'll take care of the background check, which is required by law. Then, after a one-hour training session, you'll be ready to meet your Reading Buddy. How It Works Volunteers are partnered with a student/buddy and meet with the child on a weekly basis for a 30 minute session. If your schedule permits, volunteers are welcome to sign-up for additional time slots to mentor more than one child.Volunteers monitor and assist by reading to the student, listening to the student read, encouraging the student, and attending the student's school activities if they would like. All materials are provided, and no experience teaching reading is required. As much as supporting critical reading skills, volunteers help their buddies by establishing a positive relationship with them.

Volunteer: Little Free Library StewardSeen any forlorn Little Libraries around the Kingsport area? Our local book-lending boxes are always in need of an "adoptive steward" to help restock, clean, spruce up and take care of them! These "Little Free Libraries" are great ways to ensure that kids and adults in our area have quick, easy access to free books--anytime! Let United WE READ know if there is a LFL in need of some love--better yet, let us know if you've adopted one, or what you've done to help address any issues you saw! Don't have a LFL in your neighborhood, but want one? The official LFL site has loads of information on how to build, register, and maintain your very own! Let us know if you add one!
