Volunteer: Literacy Council Seeks Volunteer TutorsAre you ready to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life?
The Literacy Council of Kingsport is seeking compassionate and dedicated volunteers to serve as ESL (English as a Second Language) Tutors and Adult Basic Education (ABE) Tutors for adults in our community. Our tutors help adult learners improve their English language skills or gain basic literacy and math skills needed for everyday life, employment, and independence. With over 10 ESL students and numerous ABE students currently waiting for tutors, your time and effort could have a life-changing impact. Work one-on-one with an adult learner to build skills in reading, writing, speaking, or math. Use a structured, pre-designed curriculum (no lesson planning required). Conduct sessions in-person or via Google Meet, depending on your preference. Time Commitment: Sessions are 1.5 hours long and can be held once or twice a week. Flexible schedules, with options to tutor during the day or evening. Qualifications: No prior teaching experience or second language skills are required—just proficiency in English and a passion for helping others succeed. Training will be provided to prepare you for your tutoring journey. Training and Orientation: We can offer 1-on-1 tutor training at a time that is convenient for you! The Literacy Council of Kingsport is looking for Homework Help Tutors to support K–5th grade students at Girls, Inc. of Kingsport. Volunteers will assist children with homework in a variety of subjects in a structured, after-school setting. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to give back in a fun, low-pressure environment while helping kids succeed in school! What You’ll Do as a Homework Help Tutor:Work with elementary students one-on-one or in small groups Provide help with homework in subjects like reading, writing, and math Offer encouragement and support to help children stay on track Time Commitment:Mondays and/or Thursdays from 5:00–6:00 p.m. Just one hour per session—volunteers can serve once or twice a week Ongoing need during the school year Qualifications:Comfortable helping with basic K–5th grade homework across subjects Patience, positivity, and a genuine interest in working with children Must be willing and able to pass a background check (paid for by the Literacy Council) Volunteers must be at least 21 years old Training and Support:No formal training is required, but volunteers will receive guidance and support from Literacy Council staff and on-site partners at Girls, Inc.
