Description

Do you want to help a child become a confident reader?

The Literacy Council of Kingsport is looking for patient and enthusiastic volunteers to serve as children’s reading tutors for our in-school reading program. Volunteers work one-on-one with elementary students in grades K–3 who need extra support in reading.

Our tutors focus on building reading comprehension, vocabulary, decoding skills, and—just as importantly—self-esteem and confidence.

What You’ll Do as a Children’s Tutor:

  • Work one-on-one with a student during the school day in a local elementary school.

  • Help children build key reading skills using structured materials.

  • Encourage and support young readers as they grow and gain confidence.

Time Commitment:

  • Sessions are 30–45 minutes, once or twice per week.

  • Scheduling is during school hours.

Qualifications:

  • No teaching experience is required—just a love for reading and a desire to help children succeed.

  • Volunteers must be willing and able to pass a background check. (The Literacy Council covers the cost.)

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

Training and Orientation:

Our next Children’s Tutor Training is on Saturday, August 23rd from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Literacy Council Office (247 Broad Street, Suite 300, Kingsport).

You’ll receive:

  • A brief overview of the science of reading

  • Training on Dolch sight word charts

  • Practical tools to support struggling readers in a fun and effective way

All materials are provided.

Why Volunteer?

  • Make a lasting impact on a child’s reading journey

  • Help students gain the confidence they need to succeed

  • Be part of a community that believes in the power of literacy
